The 2021 Pres­i­dent’s Medal win­ners are Niall Ho­sein of Na­pari­ma Col­lege and Ni­kee­sha Nan­coo of Lak­sh­mi Girls’ Hin­du Col­lege.

Ho­sein was the top-per­form­ing stu­dent in En­vi­ron­men­tal Stud­ies, In­for­ma­tion and Com­mu­ni­ca­tion Tech­nol­o­gy, Math­e­mat­ics, and Nat­ur­al Sci­ences; while Nan­coo was the top stu­dent in Busi­ness Stud­ies, Cre­ative and Per­form­ing Stud­ies, Gen­er­al Stud­ies, Lan­guage Stud­ies, Hu­man­i­ties and Tech­ni­cal Stud­ies.

In pre­sent­ing the 2021 schol­ar­ship list via re­lease yes­ter­day, Ed­u­ca­tion Min­is­ter Dr Nyan Gads­by-Dol­ly con­grat­u­lat­ed all re­cip­i­ents as she ac­knowl­edged the chal­lenges they faced due to the COVID pan­dem­ic.

She said, “This is a phe­nom­e­nal achieve­ment for these stu­dents, es­pe­cial­ly giv­en the chal­lenges of the last two years that would have af­fect­ed their mode of ed­u­ca­tion and forced them to adapt quick­ly.

“This is tes­ta­ment to their dis­ci­pline and re­silience. I al­so con­grat­u­late their teach­ers and par­ents for their sup­port.”

The award of schol­ar­ships was based on the re­sults of the 2021 Caribbean Ad­vanced Pro­fi­cien­cy Ex­am­i­na­tions (CAPE), and was award­ed in ten cog­nate groups, based sole­ly on aca­d­e­m­ic per­for­mance.

For the aca­d­e­m­ic year 2020/2021, a to­tal of 100 schol­ar­ships were award­ed. This com­prised 44 Open and 56 Ad­di­tion­al schol­ar­ships.

An analy­sis in­di­cat­ed that of the 100 schol­ar­ships, 66 per cent were award­ed to fe­male stu­dents, while 34 per cent were award­ed to male stu­dents.

The most num­ber of schol­ar­ships, 13, were award­ed in the cat­e­go­ry of Nat­ur­al Sci­ences.

Lak­sh­mi Girls’ Hin­du Col­lege se­cured the most num­ber of schol­ar­ships, cop­ping a to­tal of ten al­to­geth­er – best­ing St Au­gus­tine Girls’ High School and Na­pari­ma Girls High School, who se­cured a to­tal of nine schol­ar­ships each.

St Joseph’s Con­vent, St Joseph and Na­pari­ma Col­lege tied with a to­tal of eight schol­ar­ships each.
