The 2021 President’s Medal winners are Niall Hosein of Naparima College and Nikeesha Nancoo of Lakshmi Girls’ Hindu College.
Hosein was the top-performing student in Environmental Studies, Information and Communication Technology, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences; while Nancoo was the top student in Business Studies, Creative and Performing Studies, General Studies, Language Studies, Humanities and Technical Studies.
In presenting the 2021 scholarship list via release yesterday, Education Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly congratulated all recipients as she acknowledged the challenges they faced due to the COVID pandemic.
She said, “This is a phenomenal achievement for these students, especially given the challenges of the last two years that would have affected their mode of education and forced them to adapt quickly.
“This is testament to their discipline and resilience. I also congratulate their teachers and parents for their support.”
The award of scholarships was based on the results of the 2021 Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE), and was awarded in ten cognate groups, based solely on academic performance.
For the academic year 2020/2021, a total of 100 scholarships were awarded. This comprised 44 Open and 56 Additional scholarships.
An analysis indicated that of the 100 scholarships, 66 per cent were awarded to female students, while 34 per cent were awarded to male students.
The most number of scholarships, 13, were awarded in the category of Natural Sciences.
Lakshmi Girls’ Hindu College secured the most number of scholarships, copping a total of ten altogether – besting St Augustine Girls’ High School and Naparima Girls High School, who secured a total of nine scholarships each.
St Joseph’s Convent, St Joseph and Naparima College tied with a total of eight scholarships each.
