Nekeisha Caine and her baby boy, Kymani Joseph, will be buried in the same casket on Tuesday.Their funeral service will take place at the Corpus Christi RC Church, Success Village, Laventille, from 12.30 pm.Nekeisha's aunt, Sonia Caine, said yesterday Crime Watch president, Ian Alleyne, has committed to cover funeral expenses.
The 26-year-old woman died last Tuesday morning at the Port-of-Spain Maternity Hospital after choking on her own vomit.
Her waterbag broke 24 hours before and she was rushed to hospital from her Trou Macaque, Laventille, home. Her family has blamed the hospital for her death, saying if doctors and nurses had kept a close eye on her or her baby she would have been alive today.
Baby Kymani was Nekeisha Caine's first and her mother's first grandchild as she was her mother's only child. Following the deaths, the Ministry of Health promised an investigation would be done to determine whether there was negligence on the part of the hospital.
Health Minister Therese Baptiste-Cornelis told the family last Wednesday if the hospital was found to be wrong those involved would be held accountable. So far three nurses and a Nigerian doctor, who were on call at the hospital at the time of Nekeisha death, have been questioned by the ministry.
Relatives said they were told the pregnant woman complained about feeling upset after she received four IVs for inducing labour.
They said she was in excruciating pain and had asked for a bedpan in which to vomit. Within 20 minutes of getting the bedpan, a source said, Nekeisha Caine was dead.Sonia Caine said her niece's delivery date was October 27 and she had no complications during her pregnancy.
