Police officers continue to take statements to check against the evidence, as the investigations into the kidnapping of doctors Rudradeva Sharma and Prem Naidoo, which subsequently led to Sharma’s death are ongoing.
But up the yesterday, the officers were still working on their report, hoping to submit a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions’ office later this week.
The 19-year-old suspect from Lady Hailes Avenue, San Fernando remained in police custody. His alleged 17-year-old accomplice was discharged from the Neurology ward, but remained in a serious condition at the San Fernando General Hospital, suffering from internal injuries and bone fractures.
Investigators said yesterday that there was nothing new to report. Sharma, 38 of La Romaine, a general practitioner at the San Fernando General Hospital and Naidoo, 37, of Palmiste had finished their shift around 10 pm last Tuesday
According to police, both doctors went to Pleasantville and purchased marijuana, then proceeded to Rushworth Street Extension, San Fernando where Sharma parked his white Honda CRV SUV. While they were smoking, three men, one armed with a firearm, approached and robbed them of their mobile phones.
The suspects tied up the doctors and placed them in the back of the vehicle and drove the SUV to the Solomon Hochoy Highway.
But as they approached Macaulay, Claxton Bay around 1.50 am Wednesday, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to flip several times before stopping in the grass.
Police responded along with ambulances and the occupants were taken to the hospital. However, Sharma, the nephew of former Tourism Minister Chandresh Sharma, was dead.
One firearm was discovered at the scene. Investigators initially thought they were dealing with a fatal road traffic accident, but learnt from Naidoo that it was actually a kidnapping.
Based on video footage, a fourth suspect may have run away from the scene.
One of the suspects, Akeem Marine, 19, of Lady Hailes Avenue, San Fernando, died the following day. Police said Marine was a known firearm offender. Dr Naidoo was discharged. Sharma was cremated on Sunday at the Shore of Peace, South Oropouche following a funeral at his home.
