Min­is­ter in the Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion, Lisa Mor­ris Ju­lian MP, has con­firmed to the Sen­ate, that stu­dents who missed ex­ams yes­ter­day be­cause of flood­ing will not be giv­en make up ex­ams. She said it was not the pol­i­cy of the Caribbean Ex­am­i­na­tions Coun­cil (CXC), which sets the ex­am, to al­low make ups.

"In cas­es like these which have oc­curred pre­vi­ous­ly, the Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion col­lects ver­i­fied stu­dents' spe­cif­ic da­ta from schools and makes rep­re­sen­ta­tion to CXC for com­pas­sion­ate con­sid­er­a­tion on be­half of the stu­dents," Mor­ris Ju­lian ex­plained.

She said stu­dents will re­ceive a pro­rat­ed ex­am­i­na­tion grade based on their per­for­mance in oth­er ex­ams they would have been able to sit, and their SBA grade.

The Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion made arrange­ments to fa­cil­i­tate stu­dents who had dif­fi­cul­ty get­ting to their cen­tres to sit the CSEC ex­am­i­na­tion.

Guardian Me­dia un­der­stands some stu­dents were told they could re­port to the near­est cen­tre to them to take their ex­ams.

"These mat­ters were han­dled on a school by school and in some cas­es a stu­dent-by-stu­dent ba­sis as the need arose," she ex­plained.

Mor­ris Ju­lian told the Sen­ate prin­ci­pals were re­quest­ed yes­ter­day to send any in­for­ma­tion re­lat­ing to the stu­dents who miss ex­am­i­na­tions due to flood­ing. She al­so ad­vised par­ents of the stu­dents af­fect­ed to li­aise with the school prin­ci­pals to en­sure that their chil­dren are on the list.
