Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man early Monday morning during an altercation with an off-duty police officer in Siparia.
Investigators said that around 7 a.m. on Monday, a police constable of Darsan Trace, Siparia, had just returned home when he was approached by Zane Bowen, who was reportedly armed with a cutlass and a piece of wood.
Police said an altercation ensued between the two men, during which the officer retreated into the yard of his residence. However, Bowen allegedly followed him inside and continued the confrontation.
At that point, the officer, who is currently on injury leave and holds a Firearm User’s Licence (FUL), drew his Glock pistol and fired several shots at Bowen, hitting him multiple times about the body.
Bowen reportedly collapsed and died at the scene. Officers of the Siparia Police Station, including W/Cpl Deonath, responded immediately. Senior officers, among them ASP Lewis, Duty Inspector Mungroo, and Sgt Jaglal, also visited the scene, along with officials from the Homicide Bureau, Crime Scene Investigations (CSI), and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
The District Medical Officer (DMO) was summoned and later pronounced Bowen dead. Undertakers later removed the body.
Investigators recovered several spent shell casings from the scene and are continuing inquiries into the circumstances leading up to the fatal shooting.
Police said a full report will be compiled for submission to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Investigations are continuing.
