Po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing the fa­tal shoot­ing of a man ear­ly Mon­day morn­ing dur­ing an al­ter­ca­tion with an off-du­ty po­lice of­fi­cer in Siparia.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors said that around 7 a.m. on Mon­day, a po­lice con­sta­ble of Darsan Trace, Siparia, had just re­turned home when he was ap­proached by Zane Bowen, who was re­port­ed­ly armed with a cut­lass and a piece of wood.

Po­lice said an al­ter­ca­tion en­sued be­tween the two men, dur­ing which the of­fi­cer re­treat­ed in­to the yard of his res­i­dence. How­ev­er, Bowen al­leged­ly fol­lowed him in­side and con­tin­ued the con­fronta­tion.

At that point, the of­fi­cer, who is cur­rent­ly on in­jury leave and holds a Firearm User’s Li­cence (FUL), drew his Glock pis­tol and fired sev­er­al shots at Bowen, hit­ting him mul­ti­ple times about the body.

Bowen re­port­ed­ly col­lapsed and died at the scene. Of­fi­cers of the Siparia Po­lice Sta­tion, in­clud­ing W/Cpl De­onath, re­spond­ed im­me­di­ate­ly. Se­nior of­fi­cers, among them ASP Lewis, Du­ty In­spec­tor Mungroo, and Sgt Jaglal, al­so vis­it­ed the scene, along with of­fi­cials from the Homi­cide Bu­reau, Crime Scene In­ves­ti­ga­tions (CSI), and the Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tions De­part­ment (CID).

The Dis­trict Med­ical Of­fi­cer (DMO) was sum­moned and lat­er pro­nounced Bowen dead. Un­der­tak­ers lat­er re­moved the body.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors re­cov­ered sev­er­al spent shell cas­ings from the scene and are con­tin­u­ing in­quiries in­to the cir­cum­stances lead­ing up to the fa­tal shoot­ing.

Po­lice said a full re­port will be com­piled for sub­mis­sion to the Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tions (DPP).
