Minister of Public Utilities Barry Padarath said the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) should have communicated more effectively with the public about the severity of a leak along the Beetham Highway that caused a major traffic backup on the first day of school.
He said WASA reported that one of its major pipelines ruptured yesterday evening in the vicinity of the Lighthouse. Emergency work was carried out up to 5 a.m. to fix the problem.
WASA said the road surface remained saturated, so resurfacing could not be done immediately. Management, however, assured that the area would be resurfaced by the end of today.
Padarath expressed empathy for the public and said that once WASA realised the overflow could not be resolved in time, they attempted to alert commuters. He stressed that better communication is expected and has called for a full report on the unplanned project.
