Palmiste Government School students celebrated Indian Arrival Day with a colourful fashion showcase and cultural presentation, despite continuing to operate from two temporary locations following the devastating fire that destroyed the school in December 2023.
The school’s junior department, currently housed at the Edinburgh 500 Community Centre in Chaguanas, hosted the event, which featured students dressed in a variety of traditional East Indian attire, including lehengas, saris and shalwars. The senior department continues to function from Longdenville Government Primary School under the temporary accommodation arrangement.
As part of the Indian Arrival Day observance, the students proudly showcased the vibrant outfits while learning about Indian culture and traditions.
The event served as both an educational and celebratory experience, highlighting the rich heritage of the East Indian community.
School officials described the activity as an opportunity to promote cultural appreciation, inclusivity and unity among pupils.
The celebration also underscored the resilience of the school community, which has continued its academic and extracurricular programmes while awaiting the reconstruction of its school building.
