The sweet sounds of Steelpan and Tassa filled the Carnival Monday night air in Chaguanas as the Pan and Tassa concert was held.
Chaguanas Borough Carnival Committee chairman Rene Bailey said she was pleased with the increase in spectators not just at the concert but at all events held in the central borough this year.
The show began around 6 pm with an opening performance from the New Age Trendsetters Steel Orchestra followed by the Shooting Stars Tassa Band.
The Tropical Angel Harps and Pan Angels also performed and the evening culminated with a dancing competition for members of the public who performed to the strains of the Tassa drums. A large number of Venezuelan migrants made up the crowd and several migrants told Guardian Media that regional celebrations are how they learn about, appreciate and participate in T&T’s culture. Some even participated in the dancing contest.
