The Police Complaints Authority (PCA) has raised concern over an increase in police-involved fatal shootings following the declaration of the nationwide State of Emergency (SoE) on July 18.
In a media statement yesterday, the PCA confirmed it is actively monitoring five incidents, all of which occurred within the first five days of the SoE.
As the independent body tasked with overseeing law enforcement conduct, the PCA said each case will be investigated in line with its legislative powers.
“The PCA remains steadfast in its role as an independent oversight body and continues to call for accountability, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law in all police interactions with members of the public, particularly in periods of heightened security operations,” the statement read.
Although the PCA did not disclose the identities of those killed or details of the circumstances, it assured each case will undergo a thorough examination.
The most recent incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, when police shot and killed escaped prisoner Abraham Briggs along Guaico Tamana Road in Sangre Grande.
On Tuesday night, Kitwana Wilkinson, of Annabelle Street, Couva, was also killed during a police operation targeting illegal firearms and ammunition.
Two other men, linked to the kidnapping of Jankie Satie Karim, were killed on Monday night during anti-kidnapping operations in Arima and Rampanalgas.
One of the deceased has been identified as Zechariah Williams, 24, of Piarco Old Road, D’Abadie. The other suspect has not been officially identified.
The earliest of the five shootings took place last Friday—the same day the State of Emergency was implemented.
In that incident, Kenneth Agard was shot dead by police during a confrontation along the Endeavour, Chaguanas overpass.
