"It is Tobago time now!"
Progressive Democratic Patriots deputy leader Farley Augustine addressed supporters Monday night after toppling the People's National Movement to take control of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA).
Unofficial figures show the PDP won 12 districts, while the PNM managed to hold onto 3. The official results will be released by the EBC.
Augustine said that in less than five years, the PDP was able to achieve what previous longstanding political parties could not.
"The things I covenant with you remain the same," Augustine told the gathering
The covenant includes a changed THA which would work toward the benefit for all Tobagonians and not just "a few."
"I wish to use this platform to say to you we cannot disappoint Tobagonians anymore," he said.
Augustine said that Tobagonians were disappointed over the last 21 years.
"Tonight starts a new day for Tobago," he said.
Augustine said that they could not behave like those who ruled before and said that they would be held to a higher standard.
"Tobago I cannot thank you enough," he said.
Augustine said this win was a rejection of a Tobagonian Prime Minister over the incomplete autonomy.
"We have rejected your bullying tactics and the kind of bullying that happens in Trinidad, we reject that," he said.
Augustine also called for a cordial relationship with Prime Minister Rowley and asked him to not penalize the people of Tobago. Augustine said that the people of Tobago are strong enough to topple him.
Augustine said that Rowley was the Prime Minister of all the people of T&T and not just of the PNM.
He called on the supporters of the PDP to lead the way to the change.
Augustine said he would "forever big up" the party's political leader Watson Duke and lay all credit for the win at his feet.
He said that Duke took all the licks during this election.
"We have had a long and arduous battle," he said.
Augustine said that the PDP win showed that no amount of "big money" from Trinidad could not win an election in Tobago and mentioned the money spent by the PNM on ads to discredit the PDP.
Augustine said that he was ready to get to work and was no longer wearing the PDP insignia because it was no longer about the party but it was now about the country.
