Flood waters are still rising at various parts of Penal and Barrackpore following several hours of overnight rainfall.
At Sammy West Trace, a wall collapsed with the force of the floods while at Rahamut Trace Marilyn Boodoo and her family had over three feet of water inside their home. An urgent request for a pump was made from the Disaster Management Unit.
Along Penal Rock Road near the five-mile mark, over two feet of water remained on the street, stretching for over a mile. Goodman Trace was impassable.
At Ragoonanan Trace, Simi Jamuna and Roger Mansingh hurriedly boarded up their pluckshop as the low-lying areas became inundated.
Mansingh said the drains were clogged and every year they suffer from floods.
“We have moved out the poultry stocks and we are praying for this water to go down,” he said as the floods rose.
Chairman of the Penal/Debe Regional Corporation Gowtam Maharaj said heavy equipment is on standby to clear watercourses while the Disaster Management team has been assisting residents.
He called on the government to release $21 million allocated in the last fiscal budget for developmental projects. Guardian Media will update this story as more information comes to hand.
