Piarco International Airport has been named the best airport in the Caribbean and the third best airport in Latin America and the Caribbean region by Skytrax World Awards.

The announcement was made last weekend during the Airports Authority’s awards ceremony titled Recognising Outstanding Performance & Service Excellence in celebration of its 40th anniversary as a State enterprise.

The event was staged to highlight the hard work and dedication of the authority’s pioneers of excellence—those who have served for over 30 years at theauthority, and to recognise selected employees have served with distinction.

In 2013 the ANR Robinson International Airport was one of only two airports in the Western Hemisphere to be recognised as being ISO 140001 certified in Environmental Management.

Based on a feasible study done by staff, the European Union (EU) has agreed to provide the authority with a grant of 1.4 million Euros to construct a first of its kind in T&T, a solar panel electricity generation farm at Piarco International Airport. This project will commence in 2020.

The authority said its Aviation Training Centre at Mausica stands out prominently in the region as it continues to attract aviation professionals from across the globe who come to this country for quality training in a high quality customer service environment.

The authority’s general manager Hayden Newtonsaid, “The recognition by the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) of Trinidad and Tobago’s high level of compliance with the Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS) promulgated by the Chicago Convention and its Annexes is a tribute to the good work of the employees.

He added, “Further, our safety management and security systems too continue to be lauded by local and international stakeholders as good examples of best practice in airport management. In 2019, the authority received an award from the Airports Council International (ACI) for Airport Excellence (APEX ) in security”.
