“I am surviving!”

That’s the response given by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley when asked to give an update on his health yesterday, following his recent treatment for a cardiac complaint.

Speaking to members of the media after touring the APT James, the Prime Minister said his doctors had told him he has been responding well.

“At my age - I am not a teenager anymore like you all - but I am still at work.”

He added, “I thank God for the opportunity to have gone through and continue.”

However, he said he has had to “slow down” his routine and is trying to get more than three hours of rest.

“If I go to bed at 10 o’clock, I wake up at 1 o’clock or midnight or 3 in the morning and I am not getting as much sleep as I require,” Rowley added.

Asked whether he has to undergo any further medical tests, Rowley admitted that he may have to undergo other tests but they were not cardiac-related. He said he is expected to visit his doctors in three months.

On January 9, Rowley was admitted to the West Shore Private Hospital in Cocorite after suffering chest pains that day. He was kept at the facility for two nights and underwent an angiogram and angioplasty procedure to clear blocked arteries. He returned to work last Tuesday and immediately chair a virtual meeting of CARICOM Heads.

In 2016, Rowley’s doctors observed soft plaque developing in one of his arteries. In February 2019, he underwent a series of medical tests on his heart in California.

Despite finding out just three days earlier—on December 23—that I had breast cancer, I still got dressed and showed up on December 26, Boxing Day, for a birthday party. I didn’t go to escape the truth. I went to remind myself I was still here, still living, still me.
