Tobago East MP David Thomas says that Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is likely to visit Tobago before the end of August.

He told Guardian Media yesterday that the visit was expected to happen as several Government ministers were scheduled to be on the island between now and the end of the month.

“… a barrage of ministers would be in Tobago between now and the month’s end, which should include the Prime Minister,” Thomas said.

He added that the trip will be scheduled before Parliament reopens to allow for consultations on pending matters to be completed.

So far, ministers, including Works and Infrastructure Minister Jearlean John, Energy Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal, and Health Minister Dr Lackram Bodoe, have made official visits to Tobago.

Since winning the election on April 28, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar has said it was important for the central government to work well with the Tobago House of Assembly (THA). She talked about having ongoing talks and respect between both sides, unlike the tense relationship before under the previous People’s National Movement-led government. She spoke of a team effort to help Tobago and the whole country face their problems.

On May 27, Persad-Bissessar and THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine had a long meeting to talk about how to work together for Tobago’s growth. A release said both parties talked about cooperation and meeting the needs of people in Tobago.

Tobago autonomy was also discussed.

It said the meeting was seen as a good step towards a stronger partnership between the central government and the THA.
