Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has realigned Ministerial responsibilities for 10 plus frontline Ministers - including Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander who's now responsible for the prison system.
And the PM's office will now hold more responsibilities- apart from Constitutional Reform- for the Housing and Village Improvement Programme (HVIP) and other public assistance programmes.
The realignment became effective last Saturday.
President Christine Kangaloo reassigned the responsibilities, acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister, and in accordance with section 79(1) of the Constitution with effect from 3rd October, 2025.
Among the changes, Justice Minister Devesh Maharaj previously held responsibility for the prison system. Maharaj also lost responsibility for the criminal justice system to Attorney General John Jeremie.
But Maharaj now also has added responsibilities including some held by Jeremie's Ministry - the Environmental Commission, Equal Opportunity Commission, Equal Opportunity Tribunal and Tax Appeal Board, Council of Legal Education, Hugh Wooding Law School.
And responsibility for Regularisation of Tenure/ Housing for Squatter has been shifted from Housing Minister David Lee to Legal Affairs Minister Saddam Hosein.
In the gazetted notice, responsibilities were shifted from some Ministers to others.
Those whose Ministries where shifts largely occurred - particularly receiving new responsibilities - are: Prime Minister Kamla Persad- Bissessar, Attorney General John Jeremie, Finance Minister Dave Tancoo, Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander, Justice Minister Devesh Maharaj, Labour Minister Leroy Baptiste, Legal Affairs Minister Saddam Hosein, Planning Minister Kennedy Swaratsingh, Minister of the People/Social Development Vandana Mohitand Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath.
Those who were affected by removal of certain responsibilities also - but received no new responsibilities, were Housing Minister David Lee, Health Minister Lackram Bodoe, Culture Minister Michelle Benjamin, Sports Minister Phillip Watts and Public Administration/AI Minister Dominic Smith.
