The lone PNM councillor elected in the Mayaro/ Rio Claro Regional Corporation took his oath of office at the council chambers earlier today.

However, all five of the UNC councillors failed to show up and none gave any official explanation for their absence.

The Corporation's Chief Executive Officer Ashmead Mohammed called the meeting at 10 am but no councillor was present.

Perez walked in just after 10:30 am.

Mohammed reconvened the meeting saying there was a possibility that the others were caught in the traffic caused by the closure of the Unipet has stations.

When the meeting was called at 11 am, Mohammed made a roll call. He called the names of the councillors three times but there was no answer.

The staff members waited more than one hour and 15 minutes before Mohammed proceeded with swearing-in of councillor Wendell Charles Perez who was elected under a PNM ticket for the seat of Mayaro/ Guayaguayare.

A source said the UNC took a decision not to attend the swearing-in because it was deemed unconstitutional having been called three days after a recount of the Guayaguayare seat.
