The Opposition People’s National Movement was unable to provide an update on how yesterday’s caucus went, even as the party considers whether to ask the Integrity Commission to investigate Housing Minister Anil Roberts.
Controversy surrounded Roberts’s disclosure of HDC documents linked to the family of St Vincent Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves. Party officials said a decision would be taken at the meeting, but although sources confirmed it took place, no one responded to confirm its outcome.
On Tuesday, Roberts posted a Facebook video accusing Gonsalves of being disrespectful to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. He claimed the Gonsalves family received “great benefits” from the former PNM administration and displayed HDC documents for three Victoria Keyes apartments owned by Gonsalves’s wife, Eloise, son, Storm, and daughter, Soleil Gonsalves.
Former housing minister Randall Mitchell said Roberts may have breached the Integrity in Public Life Act by disclosing “confidential information” on the purchases. The PNM also argued Roberts is attempting to deflect from the Lifesport issue and stressed Victoria Keyes is an open market development.
Guardian Media asked the Integrity Commission whether Roberts’ public disclosure could breach section 28 of the Act, which states “Matters of a confidential nature in the possession of persons to whom this part applies, shall be kept confidential unless the performance of duty or the needs of justice strictly require otherwise, and shall remain confidential even after separation from service.”
The Commission said it is “statutorily prohibited from disclosing its records and information” except in specific circumstances and is therefore “constrained from providing comments.”
