Police officer gets $75k bail for assault

A Po­lice Con­sta­ble was grant­ed bail with a sure­ty of $75,000 or an al­ter­nate cash bail of $20,000 when he ap­peared vir­tu­al­ly be­fore a Cou­va Mag­is­trates’ Court on May 29 to an­swer to charges of as­sault oc­ca­sion­ing ac­tu­al bod­i­ly harm.

As part of the bail agree­ment, he should al­so stay 100 me­ters away from the vir­tu­al com­plainant as well as stay away from the Vir­tu­al com­plainant's home and work­place.

Ac­cord­ing to po­lice, around 6 pm on Sat­ur­day, May 27, the com­plainant ar­rived at the de­fen­dant's res­i­dence and was grant­ed ac­cess to the premis­es through the front door. An ar­gu­ment en­sued be­tween them and as a re­sult the de­fen­dant then as­sault­ed the com­plainant in the kitchen area of his apart­ment by deal­ing her sev­er­al blows about her body.

The in­ci­dent was re­port­ed on the same day at the Freeport Po­lice Sta­tion and the de­fen­dant was sub­se­quent­ly charged on Sun­day, May 28.
