Police have called on licensed firearm holders to lodge their weapon “at a secure place including police stations” as they announced a ban on several items being allowed into venues as Grenada celebrates its 50thanniversary of political independence from Britain on Wednesday.
A statement from the Office of the Commissioner of Police said that a number of items including firearms or any offensive weapon, breakable bottles, oversize coolers and pots would not be permitted into the National Stadium, on Independence Day “nor the venue of any other activity during this period of Independence celebrations.
“Holders of licensed firearms are advised to lodge such firearms at a secure place, including police stations, when attending such activities. We remind the public that this protocol is applicable to all mass crowd events at any time of year,” the statement said.
The police said they were also “strongly” cautioning against the “indiscriminate and unlawful use of firearms in general” and that “persons in possession of unlawful firearms are encouraged to turn them in to the police.
“Additionally, the entrance gates at the National Stadium will be manned and searches will be conducted on individuals,” the police added.
Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell and the visiting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana are due to address a rally at the National Stadium later on Wednesday. The rally will also be attended by visiting regional politicians and members of the diplomatic corps.
