Barataria police are searching for two men who allegedly raped an 18-year-old Venezuelan woman in the yard of an abandoned house on Tuesday night.
The teenager, who lives in San Juan, had reportedly gone out with a friend to drop off rubber bands for dental braces. She left her apartment around 10.30 pm.
As she walked east along the roadway, she noticed two men following her. When she reached El Socorro Road near a mosque, the suspects—one armed with a knife—approached her and announced a robbery.
The teenager handed over her handbag, which contained a cellphone valued at $800. Instead of letting her go, the men forced her to follow them to El Socorro, where they dragged her into the open yard of an abandoned apartment building.
According to police reports, the suspects held a knife to her neck, removed her clothing, and then each raped her on a couch in the yard. After the assault, the men instructed her to leave and pointed her toward the road.
The victim flagged down a PH taxi and explained what had happened. The driver took her to the Barataria Police Station, where a Spanish interpreter was contacted to assist officers with translating her statement.
Police returned to the scene with the victim, canvassed the area, and obtained useful CCTV footage.
She was later taken to the El Socorro Health Centre for a medical examination, and a medical certificate was issued on her behalf.
The interpreter has agreed to assist officers in recording a full statement from the victim.
