Police opened fire on armed suspects in two separate incidents in the North-Central Division on Friday—one in Oropune Gardens and the other in Elizabeth Gardens, St Joseph.
In the first incident, officers were on patrol at 4 am when they received a report of a suspicious man seen on 17th Street, Oropune Gardens. While responding, they got a second alert that a silver Nissan Almera had just been stolen on Third Avenue.
The officers later spotted the vehicle and intercepted it by blocking its path. One of the occupants leaned out of the front passenger-side window and pointed a gun at them.
Police returned fire. The gunman jumped out of the vehicle and escaped on foot. The driver then crashed the Almera into a silver Toyota Fielder parked at the roadside. Officers arrested the driver and took him to the Piarco Police Station.
In the second incident, at 2.25 pm, officers responded to a report of a burglary at Elizabeth Gardens, St Joseph. On arriving, they saw a man jump over a wall and run toward a silver Nissan Tiida parked nearby.
Police said the man, who was armed with a pistol, pointed the weapon at them. They opened fire but missed. The suspect got into the car and drove off.
Despite coordinated searches in the area, police were unable to locate the man or the getaway vehicle.
