Homicide detectives are today expected to interview a 26-year-old man who led police to the body of taxi driver Sheraz Ali.
Last Friday, days after Ali went missing, the suspect, from South Oropouche, went to the police station with his mother. He allegedly told police that he and Ali had an argument and he stabbed him twice inside his car and Ali drove away.
He was arrested and held at the Siparia Police Station as the search continued for Ali. However, on Sunday around 5.30 pm, the suspect allegedly informed an officer that he wanted to take them to Ali’s body.
He then led a party of officers to a precipice in a forested and isolated area about 80 feet into a dirt and grassy road at Total Avenue, Gerahoo Trace, Fyzabad. Ali’s body was in an advanced state of decomposition.
Ali, who would have turned 65 years old today, was last seen by his older brother on May 19 around 9 am at Seukaran Street, Siparia, in his brown Nissan B14.
His brother went to the police station and reported him missing the following day.
Based on information received on May 21, Sgt Banmally and other officers assigned to the Santa Flora Police Station went to a forested area in Quinam Road, Siparia, where Ali’s car was found intact. Due to the state of decomposition, police said the district medical officer could not determine if Ali’s body bore any marks of violence.
Ali’s relatives went to the Forensic Science Centre yesterday to officially identify his body.
