Pres­i­dent Chris­tine Kan­ga­loo has called on cit­i­zens to chan­nel the spir­it of past labour pi­o­neers as Trinidad and To­ba­go nav­i­gates the chal­lenges and op­por­tu­ni­ties posed by ar­ti­fi­cial in­tel­li­gence (AI). In her Labour Day 2025 mes­sage, she de­scribed AI as “a pow­er­ful and com­plex tool” re­shap­ing in­dus­tries and re­defin­ing work, bring­ing both heady pos­si­bil­i­ties and re­al risks.

While ac­knowl­edg­ing AI’s po­ten­tial to boost pro­duc­tiv­i­ty and cre­ate new sec­tors, Kan­ga­loo cau­tioned about job dis­place­ment, eth­i­cal con­cerns, and da­ta pri­va­cy. She urged na­tion­al in­vest­ment in dig­i­tal lit­er­a­cy and tech­ni­cal ed­u­ca­tion to pre­pare work­ers for an AI-dri­ven econ­o­my. She called for a “whole-of-so­ci­ety” ap­proach, unit­ing work­ers, em­ploy­ers, civ­il so­ci­ety, and the State to en­sure in­clu­sive progress.
