A prisons officer, attached to the Port- of- Spain State Prison was expected to appear virtually before a magistrate yesterday charged with possession of marijuana and taking a dangerous drug into the prison.
A police release said Mark Maharaj was charged with the offences by officers of the Port- of- Spain Division on Sunday.
He was expected to appear in court yesterday.
Police said Maharaj, who has nine years’ service, was arrested after four packets of marijuana weighing one kilogramme, were allegedly found in his possession during a routine search at the jail last Friday.
A report was made to the police and Maharaj taken into custody.
Investigations were conducted by Sgt Guerra, with the assistance of officers of the Port- of- Spain Division, the Special Investigations Unit, the Cyber Crime Unit and the Port- of- Spain Criminal Investigations Division. Maharaj was charged by Guerra.
Teens in court for robbery
Two teenagers were due to appear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate yesterday to answer robbery charges.
The accused are ages 16 and 17 of Malick and Santa Cruz respectively.
They were reportedly detained at about 3 pm on Saturday in Aranguez.
A police report said officers were near Aranguez Savannah, in Aranguez, when they were flagged down by a man on the roadway.
The man told the officers he had just been robbed. The man pointed at two suspects who were running away.
The officers responded and held the teenagers a short distance away. The stolen item was recovered
