Po­lice are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions in­to the dis­cov­ery of eight hu­man corpses that were found stored at Jaisouri Trace, Freeport.

Se­nior Su­per­in­ten­dent Bhag­wan­deen, head of the Cen­tral Di­vi­sion, said the bod­ies were dis­cov­ered at a fa­cil­i­ty not au­tho­rised to store hu­man re­mains. He said in­ves­ti­ga­tions would de­ter­mine if charges would be laid. He said the bod­ies were stored by a le­git­i­mate fu­ner­al agency, which has since re­moved them un­der po­lice su­per­vi­sion and re­lo­cat­ed them to an­oth­er ap­proved fa­cil­i­ty op­er­at­ed by the said agency.

Snr Supt Bhag­wan­deen said the site was vis­it­ed by of­fi­cers from sev­er­al units along with po­lice from the Mul­ti-Agency Task Force and staff from the En­vi­ron­men­tal Man­age­ment Au­thor­i­ty, Town and Coun­try Plan­ning Di­vi­sion and the Cou­va/Tabaquite Re­gion­al Cor­po­ra­tion, Cen­tral Po­lice and the Dis­trict Med­ical Of­fi­cer.

In April this year, 56 bod­ies were found to have been placed in a sin­gle grave at the Cu­mu­to Ceme­tery in Cu­mu­to.

The bod­ies were those of 50 in­fants, four adult males, and two adult fe­males.

Po­lice ini­tial­ly said pre­lim­i­nary in­di­ca­tions sug­gest­ed the case cen­tred around the un­law­ful dis­pos­al of un­claimed corpses. To date, no one has been charged in con­nec­tion with that mat­ter. - Shas­tri Boodan
