Former chief executive officer and managing director of Trinidad Broadcasting Company (TBC) and radio pioneer, Edward McDowell, 82, died on Monday. According to the T&T Publishers and Broadcasters Association (TTPBA), McDowell demonstrated an unwavering love and enthusiasm for his service in the media.
He was the recipient of TTPBA's Award in 2004 for Excellence in Broadcast Engineering in T&T and the Caribbean, and for his lifelong commitment to the development of radio. McDowell or "Teddy," as he came to be known, was born on May 26, 1926.
TTPBA said McDowell joined Rediffusion in 1945 as a junior operator and also served media as a technician and an administrator. Forty-five years later, he retired as CEO and MD of TBC). He was also chief engineer of Rediffusion and manager of Radio Trinidad.
TTPBA said his continued love motivated him to head the team that established the British Guiana United Broadcasting Co Ltd, with two stations that became the main source of cricket commentaries and Indian music, even in Trinidad. McDowell's funeral arrangements will be announced.
