There is an increasing incidence of rape and sexual assault in T&T, according to Rape Crisis Society of T&T representative, Meagan King-Cadett,

In an interview on CNC3's The Morning Brew, she quoted statistics from the Crime and Problem Analysis Unit (CAPA) of the T&T Police Service (TTPS) which showed that between 2008 and 2018 there were 1434 reports of rape.

"With regards to sexual assault, there has been a total of 980 cases," King-Cadett said

Acknowledging that these figures only reflect cases which were reported, she added that the Rape Crisis Society has noticed an increasing trend since 2016 with 3 per cent more of their clientele reporting rape, sexual violence and domestic violence.

She said these issues affects much more than just the victims.

"It affects families, children are now being warned of predators that are on the alert, communities are being affected where we no longer feel safe," she said

King-Cadett said the Rape Crisis Society aims to empower victims, letting them know "it doesn't matter race, what nationality they belong to, they have a voice."
