New applicants for credit cards at Republic Bank will have a far lower US-Dollar limit than previous credit card holders.

According to an internal staff notice, the bank has advised that as of today (May 8, 2025):

“The maximum credit limit on any newly issued credit card will be up to US$500, or the TT-Dollar equivalent.”

The notice stated:

"This is applicable to all new customers to the bank and existing customers who currently do not have a credit card product."

It also stated that no new or additional cards are to be sold to existing customers who currently have a credit card product with RBL.

The notice said the new limit for new credit card customers was introduced as a result of continued foreign exchange constraints.

It is not the first time that the limit for new credit card holders was reduced. In December, the limit for new applicants was set at US$2,000 whereas it had previously been US$5000.

The customers who held credit cards prior to December 2024 did not have their limit reduced.

Guardian Media has reached out to RBL for further comment on the proposed adjustment, and is awaiting an official response from the institution.
