Statistical officials from Grenada and Jamaica are expected to join their counterparts from Latin America at the three day 12th meeting of the Statistical Conference of the Americas (SCA) that gets underway here on Tuesday.

The SCA is a subsidiary body of Economic Commissioner for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and is the main forum for discussing the development of statistics in the region.

ECLAC said its principal mandates include promoting the development and improvement of national statistics and their international comparability, along with international, regional and bilateral cooperation between national offices and international and regional agencies.

The SCA’s executive committee is currently chaired by Argentina and comprises Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Italy and Jamaica.

ECLAC said the meeting to be attended by representatives from the National Statistics Offices of Latin American and Caribbean countries will discuss issues of relevance for the region’s statistical development.

It said among the agenda items will be the strengthening of statistics on the environment, climate change and disasters, and progress on the implementation of platforms for access to statistical and geographical information.

ECLAC’s executive secretary José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs as well as Marco Lavagna, Director-General of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) of Argentina, the country serving as Chair of the Statistical Conference of the Americas of ECLAC; and Stefan Schweinfest, Director of the United Nations Statistics Division will attend the meeting.

“At this event, member states will address the use of statistical models to expand the availability of disaggregated data and regional mechanisms for strengthening compliance with the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics,” ECLAC said.

In addition, ECLAC said they will examine the outcomes of the Conference’s Biennial Programme of Regional and International Cooperation Activities 2022–2023, and will present and approve the proposals for establishing working groups for the 2024–2025 period.

They will also elect the Conference’s new Executive Committee for 2024–2025.
