Residents of Union Road, Diego Martin, say they are not surprised that Daniel Charles, also known as “Danny Dreads”, was killed in a shoot-out with police near his home on Monday afternoon.
Police said Charles, 48, a robbery and firearm offender, was approached by officers of the Western Division Task Force around 2.45 pm.
Charles ran from the police to a nearby Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) pumping station where he reportedly shot at police.
The officers returned fire, hitting Charles several times.
Police took Charles to the St James Infirmary where he was declared dead shortly after.
The revolver used by Charles to shoot at the police was also reportedly seized.
When Guardian Media visited Charles’ Bird Lane home yesterday no one was at home.
One of his neighbours called a relative, but she declined to comment.
Attempts were also made to contact Charles’ brother via telephone but that too was unsuccessful.
One resident said Charles had a reputation as a troublemaker in the neighbourhood and was always seen with a gun.
The resident said several neighbours felt uneasy with Charles’ behaviour adding that he was implicated in a murder case sometime ago.
The resident said she felt Charles was “marked for death” and believed if the police did not kill him, it was only a matter of time before criminals caught up to him.
“A lot of people say he was a menace. I feel sorry for anybody who gets killed but if that is a relief to the neighbours then maybe it’s for the best he had to go that way.
“There are people who own shops around here and they would want to serve him fast so he can get out, because they don’t want anyone to kill him in their business place. If that is justice well then justice prevailed,” the resident said.
Police from the Four Roads Police Station are continuing enquiries.
