A man ar­rest­ed in con­nec­tion with a rob­bery was found dead in­side a cell at the St Joseph Po­lice Sta­tion.

Capil­dave Mootoo, of Tem­ple Street, Bam­boo Set­tle­ment #2, Val­sayn, was held by po­lice around 11 pm on Ju­ly 28 fol­low­ing an al­leged rob­bery in the area. Of­fi­cers searched him be­fore plac­ing him alone in a cell.

Dur­ing a rou­tine check at around 4.50 am, of­fi­cers found Mootoo kneel­ing with a makeshift noose around his neck, fash­ioned from a jer­sey. He was bare­back and wear­ing on­ly black and white plaid box­er shorts.

The Dis­trict Med­ical Of­fi­cer vis­it­ed the scene and of­fi­cial­ly pro­nounced him dead.

Po­lice have since launched an in­ves­ti­ga­tion.
