Rowley, Browne lead congratulations for Francis

Min­is­ter of For­eign and CARI­COM Af­fairs, Dr Amery Browne says he's de­light­ed the Unit­ed Na­tions Gen­er­al As­sem­bly has elect­ed T&T Am­bas­sador Den­nis Fran­cis as its Pres­i­dent-elect.

In a brief con­ver­sa­tion with Guardian Me­dia, Browne said, "I am de­light­ed that Trinidad and To­ba­go’s ex­cel­lent se­lec­tion of Am­bas­sador Den­nis Fran­cis as our can­di­date, and our team's ef­fec­tive and strate­gic cam­paign, were re­ward­ed this morn­ing [Thurs­day] by his elec­tion this morn­ing as Pres­i­dent of the UN Gen­er­al As­sem­bly for the 78th Ses­sion, by Ac­cla­ma­tion."

Browne added, "Am­bas­sador Fran­cis is one of our best and bright­est, and all cit­i­zens should be proud of his ac­com­plish­ment.

This is the first time that a na­tion­al of our twin is­land Re­pub­lic has held this pres­ti­gious po­si­tion. I was pleased to be present in the Gen­er­al As­sem­bly Hall for to­day's elec­tion, and to im­me­di­ate­ly de­liv­er a State­ment to the Gen­er­al As­sem­bly ex­press­ing thanks to all Mem­ber States for their sup­port for Trinidad and To­ba­go's can­di­da­ture."

Browne al­so con­firmed he re­layed the news to Prime Min­is­ter Dr Kei­th Row­ley who "con­veyed his pro­found pride, con­grat­u­la­tions and con­fi­dence to Am­bas­sador Den­nis Fran­cis."
