“Run, run,” were the frantic words of Ikisha “Freeda” Wildman to her nine-year-old son before she was stabbed to death in her home on Monday night.
Instead, the boy remained in the Marabella house as his mother was stabbed in her chest and abdomen. While he was not harmed physically, relatives said he has been left severely traumatised.
Relatives believe the 43-year-old woman’s murder is linked to her brother, Atiba’s killing in May 2022, and three arson attacks which destroyed two of their relatives’ homes and a vehicle.
Wildman had just had a bath and was lying on her bed, while her son was on a chair, when she was attacked. Police said her sister, who lives opposite her home at the Train Line in Bayshore, heard her screaming.
Police said when the sister entered Wildman’s property, she saw her sister’s boyfriend, who told her that Wildman had been stabbed. Relatives saw her lying on the ground near the front stairs to her home, bleeding from wounds about her body. With the assistance of a neighbour, they took her to the San Fernando General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Speaking with reporters yesterday, her younger sister, who did not want her name published, said Wildman’s murder was not domestic. She claimed she was attacked by four men. She said they entered her sister’s seafront property by climbing over the sea wall.
Wildman, she said, told her son to run, but he stayed with her because they were very close. “He is in a state where he cannot talk. His mother’s blood from last night is still on his clothes. He is in and out. He don’t even know his self.”
She said that since her brother’s murder three years ago, relatives have been receiving a lot of threats. She claimed that their pleas to the police for assistance have been ignored.
“They never take us seriously. They burn down my little brother’s house. They burn down my niece’s house. They burn down my sister’s car. The police never help with any assistance. And it reach to this, another one of my family members died.” The sister said just a week ago, Wildman was threatened by a group of young men. However, she claimed they had no idea why they were being targeted.
The grieving sister said after her brother’s murder, the surviving relatives, including Wildman, applied to the Housing Development Corporation for a house and had pleaded with Government to help them relocate from the area, especially since where they live has no electricity and is lonely. However, she said the councillor recently assisted them with solar lights.
Describing Wildman as the life of the party, the sister called for justice. She noted that only one of the men allegedly involved in her brother’s murder had been arrested and charged.
When contacted, Southern Division Snr Supt Garvin Simon said officers from the Marabella Police Station had no reports from the family about threats to their lives. He said investigations into the fires ruled out arson.
Officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region 3, are investigating.
