Tobago shark victim Peter Smith is awake and responsive as his condition improves in the ICU unit at the Scarborough General Hospital.
In a BBC report today, his wife Joanne Smith confirmed he is also able to communicate.
Smith, a father-of-two , from Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, was attacked near the Starfish Resort Tobago in Courland Bay last Friday.
He sustained serious injuries to his left hand, left thigh and lacerations on his abdomen.
His wife reportedly said, “Peter has suffered damage to his left arm and leg, puncture wounds to the abdomen and injuries to his right hand, the full extent of which are still being evaluated.”
Sources confirmed to Guardian Media that he is responsive but under some level of sedation.
“He can say yes, no, and is aware.”
All severed limbs have been reattached
But Guardian was further informed that doctors may need to do another surgery as there is a concern that the wounds are not healing as they should.
This minor surgery will ensure that there are no internal issues.
Meanwhile, preparations are in place to have Smith flown home. Officials are awaiting the finalization of all necessary paperwork for the medi-vac (medical evacuation .)
His health care will continue in the UK, where he would undergo plastic surgery to replace tissues lost among other procedures.
