Hours before three friends from Moruga were shot and killed by a group of police officers in 2011, one of the officers was told one of the victim’s boyfriend was armed and dangerous and wanted for three murders.
Testifying in the officers’ trial before Justice Carla Brown-Antoine at the Hall of Justice in Port-of-Spain on Tuesday, ASP Anderson Pariman and retired Superintendent Zamsheed Mohammed claimed that they provided the information to PC Glenn Singh hours before Alana Duncan, Kerron Eccles, and Abigail Johnson were shot on July 22, 2011.
Mohammed claimed that he received a call from Pariman, who then included Singh in a three-way call.
Pariman admitted that during the conversation, he told Singh that the Homicide Bureau of Investigations was building a case against Duncan’s boyfriend Shumba James. He also told Singh that James was known to drive a white Nissan B15 and was “armed and dangerous”.
While being cross-examined by the officers’ lawyer Israel Khan, SC, both men admitted that they knew all six officers for over 10 years prior to the shooting and that they were not aware of any corruption and dishonesty allegations made against them.
The conversation between Mohammed, Pariman, and Singh was revealed when Senior Counsel Gilbert Peterson opened the State’s case against the officers, last week.
Peterson stated that James would testify that he borrowed a white Nissan B15 from his brother and took Duncan to the St Mary’s Police Post where he had to report three times weekly as part of his bail conditions in relation to a pending case he had before the court.
Peterson stated that after completing the process, James and Duncan visited several nearby bars where they met with Duncan and Eccles.
He claimed that when they were leaving one of the bars to purchase BBQ in Barrackpore, James left in a car with two childhood friends, while Johnson, Duncan, and Eccles followed in his brother’s car.
The shooting occurred as Johnson, Duncan, and Eccles were driving past the corner of Rochard Douglas Road and Gunness Trace in Barrackpore.
James and his friends witnessed the shooting as they drove ahead of Johnson, Duncan, and Eccles.
In their defence, the officers Sgt Khemraj Sahadeo and PCs Renaldo Reviero, Roger Nicholas, Safraz Juman, Antonio Ramadin, and Singh are contending that the three friends shot at them and they returned fire.
The officers are also represented by Ulric Skerritt and Arissa Maharaj.
Elaine Green, Giselle Ferguson-Heller, and Katiesha Ambrose-Persadsingh are appearing alongside Peterson for the State.
The trial is expected to resume this morning.
