Po­lice are try­ing to de­ter­mine the de­tails sur­round­ing the shoot­ing death of a 23-year-old San­ta Cruz man who was tak­en to the Port of Spain Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal on Sat­ur­day night.

San­ta Cruz of­fi­cers were on pa­trol near Sam Bou­caud around 8 pm when they re­ceived a re­port of gun­shots. They vis­it­ed the area and spoke with res­i­dents, but got lit­tle in­for­ma­tion. The of­fi­cers then checked Joropo, Ju­niper and Moral­do Streets, but still came up emp­ty.

Lat­er that night, po­lice were told a wound­ed man had been tak­en to hos­pi­tal by a pass­er-by. Staff told of­fi­cers that Jonee­lio Thomas was brought in with sev­er­al gun­shot wounds around 7.55 pm and was de­clared dead min­utes lat­er.

As of Sun­day morn­ing, po­lice said they were still try­ing to de­ter­mine ex­act­ly where Thomas was shot.
