Sixteen drivers were issued fixed penalty notices during a speed enforcement operation on Thursday, as police continue to warn motorists about the heightened risks of driving in wet conditions.
The exercise, conducted by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), took place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. along the northbound lane of the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway, near the Indian Trail overpass. All 16 tickets were for exceeding the speed limit.
The TTPS says the operation is part of its ongoing efforts to address a recent rise in road traffic fatalities, coinciding with the start of the rainy season.
Police are urging drivers to slow down, noting that wet roads increase braking distance and reduce reaction time—factors that can lead to serious or fatal collisions.
Motorists are also advised to check the roadworthiness of their vehicles, especially tyres, which are critical for traction on wet surfaces. Worn tyres, police warn, significantly raise the risk of skidding and hydroplaning.
Speed enforcement exercises will continue across the country. The TTPS is calling on all road users to “obey the speed limits and slow down.”
