Minister of Public Utilities, Marvin Gonzales, turned the sod to mark the commencement of works to develop three new wells in the Mayaro area on Wednesday.
The sod-turning followed a ceremony held at the site of WASA’s Well #15, along Cedar Grove Road, Mayaro, where Minister Gonzales in his address, identified this well development project, as one of several being undertaken with the aim of addressing the water supply challenges facing various unserved and underserved communities. He referenced projects that have already been completed and benefitting customers in areas such as Freeport, Arouca and Tobago, as well as projects to be started soon in Cedros, Granville, Penal and Siparia.
The new Mayaro Wells 18, 19 and 20, when completed is expected to bring the Mayaro Water Treatment Plant to its full production capacity of 500,000 gallons per day, up from the current 220,000 gallons per day. This project is expected to benefit over 6,000 customers, who will see their water supply move from one day a week or less to a minimum of three days per week.
Those in attendance at the sod-turning included: Member of Parliament for Mayaro, Rushton Paray; Chairman of the Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation, Raymond Cozier, and members of the Corporation Council; as well as Deputy Chairman – WASA Board of Commissioners, Alston Fournillier; WASA acting CEO, Kelvin Romain and members of the Management Team.
