Residents of the quiet community at Wellington Road, Debe are distressed about escalating crime in their area.

It comes after a man, whom they believe is Venezuelan, was murdered.

The identity of the deceased is still unknown. One of the spent shells found at the scene had a marking from the T&T Police Service.

Police said around 10 pm, they received a distress call from a man who said someone had just been shot at the corner of Wellington Road and Sub Office Trace.  When officers arrived, they saw the dead man slumped in a red Hyundai Elantra, which had crashed into an electricity pole. He had been shot in the head.

One eyewitness said they saw the red Elantra being pursued by a silver Nissan B-15. The vehicles continued speeding and went out of view.  Minutes later, when the witness reached the Debe sub-office, they heard the sound of rapid gunfire.

Police retrieved 27 spent shells at the scene. Twenty-six were fired from a 9 mm semi-automatic revolver, and one spent shell with a TTPS marking, as well as two live rounds of ammunition, also were seized.

Guardian Media will update this story as more information comes to hand.
