Hours after Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro directed that additional security resources be deployed in the Belmont area, gunmen shot and injured a 45-year-old St Barb’s resident as he drove through the community on Saturday.
This, even as officers were conducting enquiries into Friday’s shooting at Serraneau Road, Belmont, which claimed the life of 14-year-old Zion Roberts.
Police said Saturday’s shooting occurred around 3 pm and sent residents scurrying indoors at the corner of Serraneau Road and St Francois Valley Road, Belmont.
As officers arrived at the scene along St Barb’s Road, Belmont, they found residents who informed them one man had been injured and had driven himself to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.
Police said the victim was driving his white Nissan B15 west along St Barbs Road when two masked men began shooting at him.
Responding to questions yesterday as to what anti-crime plans were on the cards, Guevarro said while he must exercise caution about specific details, he shared, “My proposed plans would emphasize increased police visibility, enhanced use of technology, and deeper community engagement ... the public can expect a clear focus on safety, deterrence, and results driven enforcement.”
He added, “We’re tackling public lawlessness with firm, visible policing, tech-driven monitoring, and aiming at faster response times.”
Regarding murders, he said, “We’re intent on protecting our citizens and disrupting violence. I’m heartened by the response we have received from the public thus far, as this has enabled us to carry out several successful operations over the weekend.”
Guevarro added, “If this renewed trust continues in its current trajectory, we are hopeful that even greater results can be realised.”
