Two students from the St Charles High School in Tunapuna have been given the all-clear to return to school next Monday after reportedly being sent home for their braided hairstyles.

The girls’ mothers visited Guardian Media on Tuesday and claimed their children were victimised, having been embarrassed in front of classmates.

However, when contacted yesterday, the mother Heather A-Dann said her daughter and the other child have since been given the green light to resume their education.

She explained that there was an intervention made by the District Supervisor of the Ministry of Education and a meeting was held with all involved parties.

A-Dann said they came “to some kind of agreement.”

A-Dann said the matter will stay with the MoE and there will be more deliberation and she is hoping for a more permanent concession from the school.

The new hair code implemented by the MoE stated that locs, twists, plaits, afros and cornrows, shall be allowed for all students in compliance with individual School Hair Rules.
