Suspect detained outside the Port of Spain Prison

A man at­tempt­ing to throw a pack­age over the rear wall of the Port of Spain Prison, on Pem­broke Street has been ar­rest­ed and cur­rent­ly in po­lice cus­tody. 

The sus­pect was caught in the act at about 7 am on Wednes­day. 

Ac­cord­ing to an ini­tial re­port is­sued by the T&T Pris­ons Ser­vice, Pris­ons Of­fi­cers of the Emer­gency Re­sponse Unit at the Port of Spain Prison were con­duct­ing a sur­veil­lance ex­er­cise when the sus­pect was seen.  

The rapid re­sponse by the of­fi­cers re­sult­ed in the sus­pect be­ing de­tained.  

The pack­age was con­fis­cat­ed and Of­fi­cers of the Cen­tral Po­lice Sta­tion were no­ti­fied.  

The pack­age con­tained 141 grams of plant-like ma­te­r­i­al,  ten pack­ets of cig­a­rettes and one GoL smart­phone.  

The sus­pect, who is an ex in­mate, was es­cort­ed to the Cen­tral Po­lice Sta­tion where he is as­sist­ing po­lice with en­quiries.  

Com­mis­sion­er of Pris­ons, Den­nis Pul­chan ap­plaud­ed the quick ac­tion of the Of­fi­cers of the Emer­gency Re­sponse Unit, Port of Spain Prison, and is re­mind­ing all that it is an of­fence pun­ish­able by law un­der Act 25 of 2019, Mis­cel­la­neous Pro­vi­sions (Law En­force­ment Of­fi­cers) to traf­fick items in­to the na­tion’s pris­ons or at­tempt to. As such, per­sons are ad­vised to cease and de­sist from do­ing so.
