Three people remained in police custody yesterday as investigators continued probing Saturday’s fire at the Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) compound in Laventille, with further interviews and a review of security camera and social media footage expected to help establish how many people were involved.
Sources confirmed that investigators are expected to continue interviewing workers as they examine footage gathered during the investigation.
One officer said these elements would assist police in establishing a timeline of events and determining how many people were involved in the incident.
The fire began just after 5 pm on Saturday, when workers hired to clear the cable yard of TSTT’s work centre, on the Eastern Main Road in Laventille, reported that they were harassed by people described as “Beetham residents.”
Lit Molotov cocktails were thrown over the wall and into the compound, causing fires.
Police said no file had been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for consideration, as several “critical elements” of the investigation remained outstanding.
Guardian Media contacted the T&T Police Service (TTPS) Corporate Communications Unit for additional details and recommendations on how contractors could protect themselves against attacks in certain neighbourhoods.
However, a spokesperson declined to comment, saying the TTPS may host a media briefing today where these matters would be addressed.
