Armed men in a silver wagon went on a robbery spree in Tabaquite, shooting and robbing residents during the wee hours of Sunday morning.

Councillor Sharen Badal-Ahyew told Guardian Media that a resident, Matthew Chancellor, was shot and later died. After the shooting, the men allegedly robbed another person on the pavement near a church.

The robbers then drove through Tabaquite, robbing people on the bandstand before stealing a resident’s car, Badal-Ayew said. They also stopped by a shop, reversed, jumped a resident’s gate, kicked down the door, and stole jewellery.

The silver wagon was found abandoned on Church Street, Tabaquite. A black X-trail is also believed to be linked to the crimes.

Residents are preparing to stage a demonstration, calling for the immediate opening of the Brasso police station. Police are searching for the suspects.

Earlier this month Senior Supt  Ian Cathy said he was told the Brasso Police Station would be reopened in three to four weeks. He said, however, that some minor works are still pending, as he promised to address their concerns about crime.

Guardian Media will provide updates as more information becomes available.
