Police exercises in the seven divisions between Saturday night and yesterday morning resulted in seven persons being arrested for various offences. Among them was a 15-year-old who was held for robbing and wounding a patron at a bar on the Chaguanas Main Road.
At around 1.30 am on Saturday the teenager allegedly announced a robbery and attempted to grab cash from a patron who was liming at the bar. The victim began to fight with the teenager who reportedly broke a bottle and used it to stab the patron several times in the face before escaping on foot. He was held a short distance away by a security officer from the bar and taken to the Chaguanas Police Station.
In an exercise on Saturday in the Central Division, officers arrested Roger Rampersad, after 4.2 grammes of cocaine was allegedly found at his Couva home as when officers executed a search warrant. He was later charged for possession of the narcotic.
Acting on information, officers then went to an area in Chaguanas known for the sale of illicit drugs where, with the assistance of the Canine Unit, they allegedly found 288 grammes of marijuana in an abandoned building.
Northern Division officers also seized a quantity of marijuana and ammunition when they carried out a search warrant at a house in Carapo on Saturday. A 27-year-old man was arrested after 776 grammes of marijuana and ten rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition were found on the premises.
Eastern Division officers arrested a 32-year-old Mayaro man for possession of two rounds of 12-gauge cartridges.
In another incident, five pounds of cured marijuana and 160 fully grown marijuana trees were seized during an exercise by officers in the Toco district. The plants, which were found at an abandoned house off Cemetery Street, were subsequently destroyed by the officers.
Members of the Western Division Task Force did an anti-crime exercise in Bagatelle, Diego Marti, between 11 am and 6 pm on Saturday. During a search of an abandoned lot of land in an area known as Gaza, the officers allegedly found a Steyr Mannlicher .40 calibre pistol fitted with a magazine with five rounds of 40 calibre ammunition hidden behind a galvanized fence.
Exercises in the North Eastern Division on Saturday led to the recovery of a white Nissan Tiida which had reported stolen in Chaguanas. Acting on information, officers went to Williams and Bombay Streets, El Socorro, where they allegedly found a black bag containing 67 grammes of marijuana in three clear plastic packets hidden in a wall on the eastern side of the street.
Officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force performed road check exercises between 5 pm and 9 pm on Saturday and stopped a silver Nissan Versa with two occupants. The car was searched and a rectangular object wrapped in red tape containing 533 grammes of marijuana was allegedly found under the left front passenger seat. One of the vehicle’s occupants was arrested in connection with the find.
Two men were detained on Saturday, following a report of robbery with violence in St Mary’s. Reports are that a 32-year-old man had just entered his car which was parked outside a supermarket at around 7 pm on Saturday, when he was approached by three men who allegedly dealt him several blows about his body and robbed him of a quantity of cash and other items. Two of the men were arrested shortly after with the assistance of Southern Division Task Force – Area East officers.
Investigations into all these incidents are continuing.
