A 16-year-old Form Four student was detained earlier today after police discovered cannabis and a concealed weapon in his possession at a secondary school in Valencia.
Around 8:20 am on Monday 17th November 2025, an officer conducting a routine foot patrol on the school compound observed the student acting suspiciously. Concerned by his behaviour, the officer alerted the school’s Safety Officer and Principal and requested their presence to carry out a search.
While escorting the student to the Principal’s office, the officer noticed him handing a rag to another pupil. The officer intervened and retrieved the item, which contained a translucent plastic bag holding 15 packets of cannabis. The substance was later weighed and amounted to 10 grams.
A further search revealed a concealed pocket knife approximately four inches in length.
The Principal and Safety Officer contacted the Valencia Police Station, and officers from the C.O.P.S Unit responded. The student was taken to the Sangre Grande Police Station, where his mother later arrived.
He was subsequently transported to the Sangre Grande Regional Hospital for a Police Medical Certificate and later conveyed to the Booking Centre in Maracas/St. Joseph, pending placement at the Juvenile Suite after consultation with Duty Counsel.
Charges are expected to be laid against the minor with a court appearance scheduled for tomorrow.
