An explosion at one of T&TEC's sub-stations in Port-of-Spain yesterday afternoon left three employees injured and major parts of the city without electricity. According to a release from the company the explosion occurred around 2.50 pm at T&TEC's 6600-volt sub-station, Flament Street, Port-of-Spain. The three employees–Gerard Simmons, Clyde Khan and Kendall Ramsaroop–received minor injuries and were rushed to hospital where they were listed in a stable condition, T&TEC said.
The explosion knocked out power in several areas, including Independence Square, Frederick Street, Henry Street, Pembroke Street, Abercromby Street, Lower Henry Street, Prince Street, Duke Street and parts of Dundonald Street. The release said about 20 per cent of the affected area had their power restored within 45 minutes of the explosion. Investigations are continuing to determine the cause of the explosion, the company said. Up to 5 pm yesterday a T&TEC crew was still working to restore power to the affected areas.
