Three of the Caribbean's most outstanding people have been selected as the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence 2010 Laureates. The laureates were announced yesterday by the chairman of the Regional Eminent Persons Selection Panel (EPP), Michael Mansoor, at the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence 2010 Laureates Announcement Ceremony at the ANSA McAL head office, Tatil Building, Maraval Road, Newtown. The laureates honoured in their respective categories were:
2 Art and Letters – Adrian Augier of St Lucia;
2 Public and Civic Contributions – Sydney Allicock, of Guyana; and
2 Science and Technology – Dr Kathleen Coard, of Grenada.
The laureates will be honoured at a gala award ceremony on April 17. They will receive the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence Medal and Citation, TT$500,000 to support their work and professional development and the opportunity for visibility, encouragement and support across the Caribbean and beyond. Mansoor said the awards, a part of the ANSA Mc AL Foundation, were launched in 2006. He said the idea was born out of a key strategic plan to honour distinguished Caribbean citizens who exemplify Caribbean life and to promote and foster excellence in members of the Caribbean community. Mansoor said the nominees were selected from five participating Caribbean territories, each with their own nomination committees. The territories from which nominees were selected were T&T, OECS, Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados.
Programme director Maria Superville-Neilson said four fundamental criteria was used in selecting the laureates. These criteria were:
2 laureates must demonstrate a track record of consistently superior work;
2 they must have the capacity for significant future achievement;
2 their work must have had, or likely to have, a positive impact on the Caribbean region; and
2 they must be worthy exemplars to the people of the Region.
Superville-Neilson said: "Following this part of the process, the selected nominations were then sent to the EPP, from which the three laureates were chosen based on their excellent work and potential for greater achievement." The Regional Panel was chaired by Michael Mansoor. Other members included Sir Ellis Clarke, Justice Christopher Blackman, Dr Compton Bourne, Christopher Bovell, Judy Y Chang, Rev Henry Charles, Sister Paul D'Ornella, Sir Shridath Ramphal, Major General (Ret'd) Joseph Singh and Sir K Dwight Venner.{
