A Tobagonian fisherman is among five men denied bail and remanded to Dodds Prison in connection with the seizure of 580.85 kilogrammes of cannabis in Barbados.

Forty-year-old Roydell Skeete, of Sandy Hill Trace, Tobago, along with four Barbadian nationals, appeared before the No 1 District “A” Magistrates Court on Friday, where they were denied bail.

The men face multiple charges, including drug possession, trafficking, and importation. According to reports, the drugs, valued at $4.6 million Barbados dollars, were allegedly seized by members of the Barbados Police Service Narcotics Division on Welches Beach, Christ Church, on February 9. Skeete was allegedly the captain of the vessel on which the drugs were seized.

The men are set to reappear in the Oistins Magistrate Court on February 20 for a bail application. Skeete’s attorney has pleaded with the judiciary not to prolong the case. He told Barbados media that delays could leave him, as a non-national, languishing behind bars. His lawyer has asked that the prosecution and investigators have pretrial disclosure urgently to be able to prepare a defence in the matter.
