Transport Commission Clive Clarke says those with expired drivers permits may get a few more weeks to get their renewals done.

In an interview with Guardian Media on Tuesday, Clarke said claims being made in a now viral video on social media about licensing officers targeting errant drivers on the first working day of the year were not true.

The author of the video also claimed the officers would be checking for vehicle inspections.

And while Clarke said it is usual for licensing officers to be on the nation’s roads doing checks, he said there will be no “heavy handed” exercises- yet.

“While we are encouraging persons to have their vehicles inspected as soon as possible, what we are not doing is contrary to what you are hearing on social media, coming down with a heavy-handed approach and issuing tickets to persons whose vehicles are not inspected,” Clarke said.
